UCP candidates condemn Danielle Smith’s proposed sovereignty act as a ‘constitutional fairy tale’

Four UCP leadership candidates met Thursday morning and spoke out loudly as they promulgated their fellow candidates’ proposed and highly controversial sovereignty law.

Brian Jean said all candidates except Danielle Smith had been invited to the press conference. Travis Toews, Rajan Sawhney and Leela Aheer were present along with Jean as he explained it was a “political decision” to come forward and speak out.

Smith had proposed Alberta’s sovereignty law back in June as part of their platform pledges. However, it quickly became one of the main talking points as many – including Alberta’s current premier – described the provincial independence plan as “risky” and “dangerous”.

“Danielle’s sovereignty law will not do what it promises,” Jean said. He explained that some of the things she has already claimed the Prime Minister has the power to do are completely wrong, such as “enforcing vaccinations for school children is impossible”.

Jean admitted that his political views were different from those around him; However, they came together because they “are not at odds in reality.”

“So much of what Danielle Smith says is a constitutional fairy tale,” he said.

“She’s telling voters she has a magic wand that will change the way the law is administered and the way the economy works.”

Meanwhile, Aheer called the act an attack on Alberta and Canada’s values, claiming Albertans have the advantage of being leaders in Canada rather than leaving Canada.

“Either the sovereignty act is something that is a symbolic gesture, like motions passed by Quebec’s natural assembly, or the sovereignty act is patently unconstitutional and tantamount to starting a bar fight in the middle of the Confederacy,” Aheer said.

“Anyway, Danielle Smith is playing with fire and selling her supporters a fantasy.”

Global News has reached out to Danielle Smith for comment, but had not heard back at the time of this story’s publication.
