Trump wanted to announce a 2024 bid on Monday, just before the midterm vote, according to The Washington Post.
Aides successfully persuaded him not to do so, fearing it would upset the election, his report said.
Trump is now expected to announce a 2024 bid on November 15.
Advisors to former President Donald Trump persuaded him not to announce his 2024 presidential campaign Monday over fears it could upend the midterm elections, the Washington Post reported.
According to three sources who spoke to the Post on condition of anonymity, Trump had touted the idea of formally announcing his bid for the 2024 presidency at a rally for GOP Senate nominee JD Vance Monday night in Ohio.
The proposal prompted a scramble from top Republicans and some of Trump’s advisers to stop any announcement, two of the publication’s sources told them. Other aides, it was said, wanted Trump to continue.
Top Republicans have long been concerned that a Trump announcement ahead of the midterm elections could distract from their attempts to turn the election into a referendum on President Joe Biden’s performance and issues like inflation and education.
In the end, Trump backed off from the announcement, instead dropping another massive hint, which he would go on to say at the rally that he would make “a very big announcement” on November 15 at his Mar-a-Lago estate “ would do.
(Axios reported last week that November 14 would be the date when Trump would likely announce his candidacy.)
“We want nothing to diminish the meaning of tomorrow,” Trump said at the rally.
Trump has been preparing for another presidential run for months, endorsing a shrewd loyalist in the midterms who has pushed through his unsubstantiated claims that victory in 2020 was stolen from him.
He has dropped a number of increasingly explicit hints in his recent public appearances that a formal announcement is imminent.
The Republicans are forecast to make significant gains in the midterm elections, with data site FiveThirtyEight heavily favoring the party for retaking the House of Representatives and slightly for retaking the Senate.
