Former President Donald Trump will announce on Tuesday that he will submit a third bid for the White House, according to a former senior Trump aide.
Jason Miller was interviewed on Friday on former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon’s podcast and claimed that Tuesday’s “special announcement” would confirm Trump’s early entry into the presidency.
“President Trump will announce Tuesday that he is running for president, and it’s going to be a very professional, very buttoned-up announcement,” Miller said, adding that a run-through of the event at Trump’s Mar-a-Lake Home and Country Club Friday morning.
Miller added that he spoke to Trump “on the golf course” about his decision to run.
“He said, ‘It doesn’t have to be a question. Of course I run. I’m going to do that and I want to make sure people know I’m hooked,’” Miller said, Trump telling him.
In a press release Thursday night, Trump teased his possible announcement.
“President Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America, will make a special announcement on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 9:00 p.m. EST at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida. “ Release read.
The timing for Trump’s likely announcement comes as many Republicans have begun to question whether the former president should continue to lead the party going forward. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was driving for re-election in his home state on Tuesday, was seen by many as the politician better suited to become the 2024 GOP nominee, a notion that Trump clearly rubbed the wrong way Has.
On Thursday and Friday, when Rupert Murdoch’s newspapers and TV stations promoted DeSantis and questioned Trump’s standing, the former president was anything but “very professional” or “very tight-lipped.” Instead, Trump reverted to old form, attacking DeSantis and another possible 2024 challenger, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who were indebted to him for their political success.
“Ron came to me in 2017 in desperate shape — he was politically dead and lost in a landslide to a very good agriculture commissioner, Adam Putnam, who was crammed with cash and great poll numbers,” Trump said in a Thursday post on Truth Social. “Ron had low approval, bad ratings and no money, but he said he could win if I supported him. I didn’t know Adam, so I said, ‘Let’s try it, Ron.’”
“Young Kin (now that’s an interesting take. Sounds Chinese doesn’t it?) in Virginia could not have won without me,” Trump wrote in a Friday post on his social media network.
Some Trump allies have reportedly urged the former president to delay his announcement until 2024, until after December’s US Senate runoff in Georgia, which could decide which party controls that chamber, as it did in 2021.
In fact, on Thursday, Miller was one of them.
“I will advise him to delay his announcement until after the Georgia runoff,” Miller told the Associated Press. “Georgia needs to be the focus of every Republican in the country right now.”
