Just a few weeks ago, it was revealed that Square Enix had trademarked a very intriguing word in Japan. The word was symbiogenesis and is one that any Parasite Eve fan will be very familiar with, considering the word underpins the content of the 1995 horror game.
Of course, Parasite Eve fans were starting to get excited that an announcement of a remake or even some sort of spin-off was coming. For those who got their hopes up, all I can say is that my heart goes out to you, because of course Square Enix didn’t give the fans what they wanted. Still, fans will see Tactics Ogre: Reborn on November 11th, which I think is something.
Instead of announcing a new game or remake, Square Enix has instead revealed that the trademarked word Symbiogenesis is actually a new franchise for the company. A new franchise billing itself as Square Enix’s Global NFT Collectible Art Project.
As a new franchise, it seems pretty unlikely that this NFT reveal is just the beginning of a Parasite Eve revival. In fact, it appears to be entirely separate, which begs the question, why would Square Enix use the Symbiogenesis name?
It must certainly feel like a kick in the teeth to be a Parasite Eve fan right now. I can’t imagine if Konami’s Silent Hill revival was just an NFT project; I would honestly be beside myself.
Overall, it just sucks to see Square Enix — publishers behind some of the greatest games of all time — fall into the realm of blockchain and NFTs instead of just making the games players are dying for.
