The Trump-backed Wisconsin GOP nominee and 2020 draft dodger claims Republicans will “never lose another election” in the state if he is elected to office

  • Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels said Republicans would never lose an election in the state.

  • “Tim Michels is a threat to our democracy,” Governor Tony Evers said on Twitter.

  • The Michels campaign clarified the comment, saying that Michels would increase support for Republicans.

Wisconsin GOP nominee Tim Michels said Republicans would never lose a race in the state should he become governor, and concerned opponents that he would take steps to change election results once in office.

American Bridge 21st Century, a left-leaning political action committee, on Monday released an audio clip of Michels recorded during a campaign event in Jackson County, Wisconsin. Michels is running for governor against incumbent Democratic governor Tony Evers.

“Republicans are never going to lose an election in Wisconsin after I’m elected governor,” says Michels, who co-owns the state’s largest construction company.

In response to the audio clip posted to Twitter, Evers replied, “Tim Michels is a danger to our democracy.”

“Democracy is on the ballot in this election,” Sam Roecker, a spokesman for Evers, told Insider. “Tim Michels has made it clear that he will do everything in his power to make voting difficult for Wisconsinite citizens and may even overturn the fair results of our election if he does not like the result.”

Michels, a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump, has questioned the results of the 2020 election and declined to answer questions about whether or not he would confirm the results of the presidential election as governor if a Democrat took the state in a national election should win.

Michels also suggested he could use unconstitutional efforts to invalidate Biden’s 2020 win in Wisconsin once he became governor, telling local broadcaster WKOW he “needs to see the details.”

In a statement to Insider, the Michels campaign denied the audio had anything to do with the integrity of the election. Rather, the campaign said, Michels would gain more support for Republican candidates in the state by introducing “lower taxes, better schools, consistent electoral laws, and safer communities.”

“While Tim spurred supporters to get out and vote, he was referring to winning and leading and then being rewarded by voters for a job well done,” Brian Fraley, a spokesman for Michels, told Insider in a statement .

“Any attempt to make more of this hoax shows just how pathetic and desperate Tony Evers and his supporters are becoming as we near Election Day. They want to talk about anything but his four years of failure.”

An NBC analysis found that 60% of Republican candidates in five key battleground states dispute or question whether or not President Joe Biden won the 2020 election.

Experts told the New York Times that election deniers who win key offices could refuse to accept the 2024 election, which could spark litigation across the country.

Michels is looking to unseat Evers next Tuesday in a race deemed a “toss-up” by Inside Elections, The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball.
