The latest addition to Xbox Game Pass is a real little sleeper hit that you need to check out

What’s better than a Metroidvania-style 2D adventure game? I’ll tell you: a Metroidvania-style 2D adventure game built around the tent poles of self-discovery, ancient mysteries, and cosmic terror. Welcome to ghost song – an upcoming indie game Xbox Game Pass this is already being discussed today. Hollow Knight, eat your heart out.

Check out the video to see what all the fuss is about.

“On the desolate moon of Lorian, a long-sleeping Deadsuit awakens from its slumber – armed and ready for battle, with purposeful memory,” reads the game’s imposing and truly intriguing blurb. “But something new is stirring.”

The game challenges you to look beneath the surface for answers. Whether you’re navigating carefully through twisting caverns lit only by bioluminescent flora, or going head-to-toe with strange and powerful creatures, Ghost Song meets all the stuff that made Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, and Carrion such Game Pass hits.

As you would expect from a game of this genre, as you explore you must acquire new skills that will help you unearth the long-buried secrets of this unsettling alien world. “Descend deep into the darkness – only then will you know (or remember?) the truth,” the press release concludes. Threatening.

This style is sure to be captivating.

Our colleagues at RPS note that the game is “a whimsical Metroidvania with enough Hollow Knight DNA to see you through to Silksong” – great news! – but unfortunately “it never quite sings the way you hope it will”. Sounds a bit like Islets then.

“It may lack a bit of originality to stand out from its contemporaries in a fairly crowded market,” adds ScreenRant, “but the game offers a very enjoyable experience.”

GameGrin is a bit more flattering, with a full 10/10 rating, saying “Ghost Song is the perfect mix of Metroid and Hollow Knight, creating a beautiful looking game full of exploration, a great story and a spooky atmosphere.”

TechRaptor notes that while the game has some gorgeous graphics and feels good in your hands, it lacks technical sophistication – a criticism I’ve seen in a few other reviews as well.

Don’t lose your, um, head.

While there are a few minor complaints, the critical consensus on Ghost Song so far is simply that it’s good. It scores pretty good at 84 on OpenCritic and even higher at 88 (for PC) on MetaCritic – that’s higher than Scorn, TemTem, Vampire Survivors, and Immortality, for what it’s worth.

If you’re a Game Pass subscriber, you’ve got nothing to lose by checking out this game – at least it’s another cool game to play while we patiently wait to hear what the heck Team Cherry is to do with Hollow Knight: Silksong.

The game is also available for PlayStation consoles and PC.
