The head of the Sonic team promises that Sonic Frontiers is “not at all similar” to Breath of the Wild

Takashi Iizuka, Head of Sonic teamwant you to know that Sonic Frontiers “is not at all similar”, too The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It would be very fair to take one look at the upcoming Sonic Frontiers and think, “Hey, this gives Breath of the Wild vibes.” Granted, it’s a bit of a superficial, sort of reductive reaction, but come on, it definitely had some impact, right? Well, despite fairly obvious similarities, Iizuka did say in a recent interview with Shacknews (spotted by TheGamer) that the two aren’t similar.

“From development [team’s] From that perspective, they go out and make an action game,” Iizuka said. “So when you think of Breath of the Wild, you definitely see Breath of the Wild as an RPG, and it’s not at all like the action game that they make.

“You know, yeah, there’s that same element of freedom that was applied to Breath of the Wild as an RPG, and they take the high-speed linear action sonic game and implement freedom there.

“But if we think about it, ‘is it an open world game? Is it similar to Breath of the Wild?’, a lot of people on the team love the Zelda series, they love Breath of the Wild, they’ve played it, but to them they don’t really see a resemblance between the games.”

Of course, in the interview, Iizuka talked about this open zone style, which is definitely not open world, and how it differs from other games. “This open zone format has never been done before. We try to look for other titles on the market and we couldn’t find anything that had this linear platform action gameplay except in an open environment.”

Unless you’re a big completer, you don’t have to worry about beating all the bosses in the game either, as it’s not a requirement. But that in turn meant Sonic Team had to make sure the bosses had their own fun.

Shadow fans might also be disappointed to hear he won’t be in Frontiers, despite Iizuka wanting to bring him back.

Sonic has been doing incredibly well of late, with the second film becoming the highest-grossing video game film of all time earlier this year, and the entire game series has now sold 1.5 billion copies worldwide.
