Servers for the Dark Souls series on PC went offline in January to ensure security vulnerabilities in the series don’t impact Elden Ring.

The servers have been taken offline due to an apparent security vulnerability that could allow hackers to take over someone else’s computer through remote code execution. Since Elden Ring uses the same netcode, it would have been subject to the same vulnerability.

FromSoftware identified the cause after being made aware of it and began fixing the issue.

Dark Souls 3 servers were reactivated in August, and Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin was brought back online in October. Unfortunately, online services for the 2012 PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will not be restored “due to an aging system”.
