Thanks for all the free Double XP tokens, Modern Warfare 2 – it’s a shame they suck

We learned that over the weekend Modern warfare 2 developer Infinity Wardand publisher activity, was made aware of some issues players were experiencing with the Vault Edition of the game. Since players who bought the $100 version of the game received the same in-game unlock as players with other versions of the title, Activision promised to give a bunch of bonuses to anyone with the premium version of the game.

“We understand that there has been some confusion over a Game Store exclusive award for the Vault Edition,” the statement from the Call of Duty official account reads. “As such, we have decided to reward all players who currently own or purchase any version of the MWII Vault Edition with 10 Hours of Double XP Tokens and 10 Hours of Double Weapon XP Tokens.”

If you didn’t have these tokens in your account at the time of writing, you should do so now. But the thing is as it stands…these tokens are pretty much useless, poorly implemented and just seem like a complete waste of time.

Here they are, the little bastards.

I enabled some of these in-game during my Modern Warfare 2 session last night (yes, I own the Vault Edition). I have 10 Double Weapon XP tokens and 10 Double XP tokens – in an attempt to grind the game for more unlocks and better loadouts, I munched on a few before ending up alone in a few Quick Play- crashed games. I could talk about what a miserable experience it is to queue alone in-game, but that’s a separate article. Right now I want to talk about what a crappy experience it is to use these so-called apology signs.

When you activate one, there is nowhere – nowhere! – in-game with a timer that tells you how much time you have left. The UI is utterly useless if you want to quickly pull up a tab to see if it’s worth jumping into another Domination game, or if you’d better get your dinner right away. When you finally get to the results screen to see the fruits of your labor, only the operator level tells you what double XP you’ve earned – the weapons just seem to have the same progression graphs you would without popping a token. hmm

I ended up popping a token on the hour; I didn’t have to worry about pulling out my phone and running a timer if I was only playing from 5pm to 6pm, right? But that got me thinking; Are these tokens only meaningful in-game or is there more to them?

If you play MW2 Multiplayer properly, you’ll be in and out of Gunsmith quite a bit. Adjusting attachments and experimenting with different settings on your favorite weapons is part of enjoying Modern Warfare in its latest incarnation, and jumping into the menus between games is essential. It also helps ensure you have good loadouts for different maps – where would you be without a decent SMG based loadout in Crown Raceway am I right?

Per CharlieIntel, it turns out that these tokens are active for … one hour. I think that’s what it says on the can. But other games – even past CoD games! – counted playing time only. So if you popped a Weapon XP token, it wouldn’t start counting down to zero until you were actually in a match. Currently in MW2, as soon as you pop one, the countdown will start instantly, whether you’re in a lobby, the Gunsmith, or even turning off your game. Given that MW2 is having some issues with crashing and lobbies at the moment, that’s not ideal. No wonder the developers didn’t include a timer to show you that the real-time backup is burning down to zero.

So thanks for the tokens, Infinity Ward. But I’m sure you won’t blame me for keeping them for now – and only burning them when it’s worth my time a little more. Thanks for all the free Double XP tokens, Modern Warfare 2 – it’s a shame they suck
