If you watched Stranger Things season 4, took one look at Venca and thought, “God, I wish that was me,” then you’re in luck, because Stranger Things VR makes this dream come true!
Strangers Things VR is being created by Virtual Virtual Reality developer Tender Claws in collaboration with Netflix, and instead of letting you play as one of the kids, this time you play as season four’s big bad Vecna. By taking on this role, you’ll tap into the memories and dreams of characters from the show and be able to “use telekinetic powers to fight humans and creatures alike” (via Eurogamer).
The game is billed as a “psychological horror/action game” so probably not for the faint of heart. It’s also planned for all major VR platforms, although no details on that are known, and should launch in winter 2023, but again no further details.
“We’re impressed to live in the Stranger Things universe and to be able to delve into the rich inner worlds of its characters through Tender Claws’ unique approach to nested worlds and immersive dreamscapes,” directors Samantha Gorman and Danny Cannizzaro said in a joint statement .
“As fans, we want this game to be very special, and we’re encouraged by the support and enthusiasm we’ve had from Netflix and the Stranger Things creative team.”
It’s unclear if the game is intended to directly tie into the show or if it’s just its own thing, but either way it seems like a pretty cool way to experience the story of a fan-favorite villain.
Netflix recently acquired a developer Lively foxdeveloper behind the Animal Crossing-neighboring Cozy Grove, so it’s clear that the streaming giant is still interested in expanding into the world of gaming, even if (as of August) only 1% of its user base plays its games. A good reason to play as many of them as possible just in case they get taken away.
