Nintendo, Valve and Twitch suffer from fake troll accounts thanks to Twitter Blue Check changes

It had to happen: Twitter users pose as real companies and the accounts are “verified” thanks to changes to the Blue Check system.

Nintendo, Rockstar Games, Twitch, and Valve are just a few companies that have fallen victim to fake accounts, all of which have the little blue tick “verified.”

The best video games podcast out there. Yes, I said so. fight me

Thanks to a new policy introduced by Elon Musk, Twitter’s new owner, anyone can now get a blue tick next to their name for just $8.

Before the new policy went into effect, the only way to get a blue tick next to a Twitter handle was to actually verify it. Verification is now completely worthless as everyone can only pay one fee to get one.

This new feature is causing all sorts of confusion among users. For example, a “new” Nintendo of America account popped up on the social network with a blue tick, and in one of his tweets, Mario gave people the finger. Obviously, most people found out pretty quickly that this was a fake account considering Mario wouldn’t give anyone the one-fingered reception in Kentucky, but it still caused a bit of an uproar.

A fake Valve account was also created, leading people to think the company’s “next competitor platform” was a project called Richocet: Neon Prime (thanks, Eurogamer).

Rockstar and Twitch have also created fake accounts in their name.

Some accounts have been banned except for the “Twitch” account because it is a spoof account.

To help people distinguish which accounts are legitimate, Twitter yesterday rolled out an “official” tag for users like Nintendo and what you have. However, Musk decided he wasn’t keen and dropped the new, intended review.

In a tweet, Musk said Twitter will “do a lot of stupid things in the coming months” and “keep what works and change what doesn’t.”

It remains to be seen whether there will be any changes to the Blue Check system. In the meantime, however, you can find out whether a Twitter account has paid a blue tick or been verified for other reasons by clicking the Verified button in the user profile.
