A new Battle Pass has been announced for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0, this time with a focus on non-linear progression rather than the typical Battle Pass structure. This means that instead of a typical concrete structure to unlocking Battle Pass, players can pick and choose what they want to work towards.
But what will that look like in concrete terms? Well, instead of a typical series of levels and unlocks, players are presented with a multi-sector map. This map is divided into 20 sectors, with five items in each sector. When the pass goes live, you’ll be able to travel to a specific sector that interests you and unlock the loot you want from it before going out and choosing another.
The goal of this is clearly to give players more freedom, and for what it’s worth, it seems like it could benefit both free and paid players alike if handled properly. Many of you out there and I went through a Battle Pass just to unlock the free guns and ignore everything else. For such players, this could allow for a more streamlined experience.
Likewise, there are usually a few “winning” cosmetics scattered through Battle Passes that encourage paying players to continue progressing. In theory, you could now pick the skins you like for the weapons you use and focus heavily on getting them. More freedom in the hands of the player is always good!
However, all of this depends on how the progression actually works. From the official post, the resources used to dig through and travel between sectors are Battle Pass Tokens. How you unlock these is yet to be revealed, they could be challenged, experience based, or acquired through some other mysterious method. However, with a follow-up Battle Pass post coming out next week, we’re sure to be hearing more soon.
If you’re looking for a taste of what goodies are included in the Battle Pass, four new weapons are on the way in Season One. These are:
- Victus XMR sniper rifle — Free with Battle Pass
- BAS-P SMG — Free with Battle Pass
- Chimera Assault Rifle — Store Bundle or Weapon Unlock Challenge
- M13B assault rifle —Save bundle or challenge to unlock weapons
Alongside this will be the typical selection of operator skins, weapon cosmetics, sprays and so on. So you can expect pretty much the same pack that we saw with Modern Warfare 2019 and Warzone, just in a non-linear format.
All in all, I’m excited to see how this works! Every game these days has a bloody Battle Pass, everything! So it’s great to see some innovation, albeit minor, in this aspect of the live service genre. For some reason it reminded me of For Honor and its conquer the world multiplayer map. That, while not really adding much to the experience, was something that made this game stand out. We hope that the new Battle Pass for Modern Warfare 2 will have a similar effect.
