LeBron was injured late in the Clippers’ 114-101 win over the Lakers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 30 points before walking off the court with a left leg pain in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 114-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers late Wednesday night.

James felt discomfort in his leg and groin shortly after backing down on Paul George to play less than five minutes to draw a foul in the paint. James had skipped Monday’s game in Utah to ease the lingering pain in his left foot, but he had one of his best games of the season before his final physical setback

“Apart from the injury, I’m feeling good,” said James. “We will take pictures of that tomorrow and continue from there. Didn’t do anything strenuous while playing. As I landed, I felt a small cramp or tightness in my groin. I immediately asked to come out on the next playdown.”

James said the injury didn’t feel as painful as his Christmas 2018 groin injury during his debut season with the Lakers. He missed a career-high 17 games with that injury.

James, who would overtake Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s career all-time pick this season, hit four 3-pointers and added eight rebounds and five assists against the Clippers while falling a point short of his season.

“We’ll let him see our medical staff first,” said Lakers coach Darvin Ham. “It’s just a lot of adversity. He gave everything to be there for us and to play at a high level. I thought he had a really, really good time tonight. But it’s the NBA season, man. You have to be prepared for a little bit of everything so we’ll see what the results are once he’s rated and be ready to move on.”

George scored 29 points as the Clippers extended their recent dominance over their arena housemates with their ninth straight win over the Lakers. Norman Powell added 18 for the Clippers, who hit seven double-digit goals in their fifth win in their last six games without injured star Kawhi Leonard, who missed his 10th game this season.

The Clippers are undefeated in the city rivalry since July 2020 and remain perfect against the Lakers under coach Tyronn Lue, who took over in October 2020.

“I was proud of how we came out in the third quarter and regained control of the game,” said Lue. “Just being able to get it back in the second half and understanding that it’s a competition, not a show. I know it’s the two LA teams, but we play every night to get better, so it’s not a show.”

Anthony Davis had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who fell to 2-9 with their fourth straight loss. Russell Westbrook added 14 points and nine assists, but the Lakers have the NBA’s second-worst record yet.

John Wall scored 10 points on his return to the Clippers bench after sitting out the second game of a consecutive Monday night. Wall is wary of his knee and his comeback after missing two of the last three seasons.
