Education on Wagering: Non-Bettors 78% More Inclined to Bet if More Knowledgeable, According to Research

In the first week of October, a study by market research and analytics company Ledger was made public. In the study, non-bettors were almost 80% more likely to bet online if they were more educated about sports gambling. WagerWire, a marketplace for open sports bets, will release a series of data in conjunction with this study over the coming months.

Data Informs the Gaming Industry

The top reasons cited by non-punters as to why they do not participate in online betting are lack of education and understanding. When it comes to other reasons, 43 percent of non-bettors said they did not feel like they knew enough about it whilst 41 percent said they didn’t know enough about how to bet online as they believed the house always wins.

A supplementary 23 percent of the pool of respondents said they didn’t know how and where to bet online.

According to the co-founder and CEO of WagerWire, Zach Doctor:

“The data from our study clearly shows how a lack of adequate betting education is the greatest barrier to entry for would-be bettors. However, education is also the industry’s greatest opportunity to grow and expand.”

The study also revealed that only 23% of bettors use their sportsbooks for information. 46% of bettors use websites while 33% use social media and 32% use TV.

The study was finalized between July 8-July 21 2022 and it included 500 US sports bettors and 200 non-sports bettors.

Doctor went on to say that there was ‘a notable impasse’ in the present sports betting scene regarding operators pulling back on promotional and marketing investment whilst also struggling to grow their user bases and increase their market share. Doctor claims that whilst promotional ads and free bets may be flashy, it is basic education on betting that can be the key needed ‘to develop more confident, engaged, and responsible players’. This will ultimately lead to a more resilient and sustainable industry.

Education is an Opportunity

Education is the underlying principle when it comes to WagerWire’s proposition. The company is basing its content on resources, information, and tips on how to bet and how to best influence its secondary marketplace.

At this year’s Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Conference in Las Vegas, which was held between the 9 and 12 of October 2022, WagerWire co-sponsored an event with the Gaming Society that revolved around improving the baseline education of bettors. Gaming Society Co-founders Jaymee Messler and Kevin Garnett previewed the newly minted Betting Academy experience along with a preview of the Bet on Women project.

According to Messler:

This sponsorship initiates a new partnership between the two companies that pivots around education in a bid to create a healthier, more responsible and sustainable market.
