CYPRESS, Texas (AP) — A teenager who told Texas police that he and his twin sister were handcuffed and horribly abused fled his family home after finding a handcuff key and hiding it in his mouth, the authorities said in court filings.
The twins, barefoot and handcuffed, were seen on doorbell video seeking help in a Cypress neighborhood outside of Houston. Video made available to Houston television station KHOU showed the teens going door-to-door around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday seeking help.
According to an affidavit, the boy was shirtless and the girl was wearing only a plastic bag around her neck as a shirt.
Her mother, Zaikiya Duncan, 40, was arrested hours later in Louisiana after police issued a missing children’s alert for five other children. All seven children, including the twins, are now in the care of Child Protection Services, authorities said.
The 15-year-old twins were severely malnourished and told police that abuse had been going on for months, the affidavit said. They told police Duncan handcuffed them, forced them to drink bleach and other household cleaners, and also sprayed oven cleaner in their mouths “when they talked too much,” the affidavit said.
The twins also told authorities they were forced to eat and drink feces and urine, according to the affidavit.
Duncan is being held in Baton Rouge awaiting extradition for aggravated assault. Her boyfriend, 27, Jova Terrell, who lives with her, is also facing assault charges. It was not known if either had an attorney and they are expected to be extradited to Texas within 30 days, Houston television station KPRC reported.
