Beloved Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy dies after a battle with cancer

Lover Batman Actor Kevin Conroy has died at the age of 66, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed on Friday.

Conroy has voiced Batman in 15 films, as well as hundreds of television episodes and several video games, including the Batman: The Animated Series show and the Batman: Arkham games.

He died after “a brief battle with cancer,” Warner Bros. announced in a statement.

“Kevin was far more than an actor for me to cast and direct — he was a dear friend for over 30 years whose kindness and generosity knew no bounds,” casting director Andrea Romano said via the Warner Bros. Statement. “Kevin’s warm heart, his wonderfully deep laugh and his pure zest for life will accompany me forever.”

Diane Pershing, a voice actress who starred alongside Conroy as villain Poison Ivy, flagged his death on Facebook.

“Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, passed away yesterday,” Pershing wrote. “He’s been ill for a while but he’s put a lot of time into the cons to the delight of all his fans. He will be sorely missed not only by the cast of the series, but by his legion of fans around the world.”

Conroy attended Julliard School, where he was roommates with actor Robin Williams. He began his career with hard-hitting stage dramas, including acclaimed roles in Shakespeare hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

He gained his greatest notoriety when he took on the mantle of Dark Knight in 1992 Batman: The Animated Series. He continued to portray the superhero for years, during which time he became a fan favorite and a frequent guest at conventions.

He also spoke movingly about his experiences as an out-gay man navigating a less-than-acceptable Hollywood. That year he published the short story Finding Batman as part of the Graphic Novel Anthology DC Pride 2022, which focused on LGBTQ stories in the superhero universe. In the autobiographical story, he describes finding a kinship with his character Bruce Wayne, who struggles with his identity after the death of his parents.

“As Bruce, I felt disoriented and lost, unsure of my identity as my parents were cruelly torn from me. I felt disoriented and lost as an actor whose identity had been ripped from him,” Conroy wrote. “Was I my public face or my private face? Have I made too many compromises?”

Conroy is survived by his husband Vaughn C. Williams.
