Bayonetta 3 took so long because it was originally conceived as a semi-open world

bayonet 3 As we all know, it took quite a while to come out, and that’s partly because the game was originally conceived as a semi-open world game.

The third entry in the action series was revealed back in 2017 at The Game Awards, and we haven’t heard much about it for a couple of years after that, basically. According to games journalist Imran Khan, who shared on his Patreon, that’s because the game was planned as a semi-open world, which would have been quite a change from previous entries in the series.

Explaining the various reasons why the game was taking so long, Khan wrote, “For the most part, the responses aren’t shocking – it was announced very early on, there was a pandemic that really slowed things down, the original director left the project pretty early, etc .But another reason that most people don’t know is that at a certain point in development, Bayonetta 3 was intended to be a semi-open world game.”

Khan stated that the game’s design would depend more on it astral chain as Nier Automata, “but the idea was that a big hub world would send Bayonetta (or whoever) to different worlds that would be pretty open themselves.” Apparently there was “a lot of work and experimentation on this idea,” but pacing was the main issue that eventually led to it Nintendo ask PlatinumGames to scale it back. Khan also heard that this iteration didn’t work well on the Switch’s hardware either.

Bayonetta 3 has also been the subject of some controversy lately, with the title character’s original voice actress claiming that she was cheaply paid for the role and later reports clarifying how much she was actually offered, the whole thing just being a huge, unfortunate mess.

In VG247’s Bayonetta 3 review, we gave the game full marks, saying, “PlatinumGames has been a bit of a flop lately, but with this fitting conclusion to the original Bayonetta trilogy, the studio proves it’s still going strong and can fire even more. This could easily be one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch.” Bayonetta 3 took so long because it was originally conceived as a semi-open world
